Papers and music scores of William Arundel Orchard [manuscript]. 1889-1963.

Principally music scores (both published and manuscript) composed or arranged by W. A. Orchard. The two other composers who have some published works included in this collection are Philip Wilkinson and Noel Nickson. Also included are the words of Orchard's oratorio "Easter Morn" a copy of "The Musical Times" No. 1342, Vol. 95 Dec., 1954, and lecture notes. Further additions include music scores, scrapbooks, correspondence (family and business), biography, photographs, and other miscellaneous papers, programs, photographs, cuttings, family correspondence, Opera 'Dorian Gray' (Act II strings, woodwind, brass parts).

Orchard, Arundel, 1867-1961

Born in London in 1867 he settled in Sydney in 1903. He was the original conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in 1909 and in 1923 succeeded Henri Verbrugghen as Director of the New South Wales State Conservatorium of Music. He was an organist, pianist, composer and conductor and published two books: The distant view (1943) and Music in Australia (1952).
